Home / Who We Are / About Greenlight
GreenLight was started in the summer
of 2007 by Emma and Lora, friends from Oberlin College. They had both
read an article
in
the NewYork Times called "Buying
Into the Green Movement" by Alex Williams. It really struck a chord
with them and Lora had the idea to make a zine to help people understand
that there are ways to live sustainably that don't involve spending buttloads
of money on organic bamboo socks at WalMart.
Our friends were equally pumped about the idea and
kindly contributed by writing articles, submitting artwork, and helping
staple and fold copies. The first issue was released in the fall of 2007
and we've been going strong ever sense. Our friends at the Soggy Dog House
in Lakewood were super supportive of the idea and invited us to have release
shows featuring local bands at their house. Since then, local bands have
taken GreenLight on tour with them and have promoted the zine at local
shows (check out our Besties page to find links to our favorite local
bands!). We've gone to high schools around Cleveland to talk about sustainability
and brainstorm ways that environmental clubs can start some sustainability
projects in their schools.
Emma and Lora have now graduated and moved on to dealing
with the "real world." Emma is in Seattle at the moment and Lora is keeping
it real in Cleveland. Emma is still writing for GreenLight and Lora writes
and takes care of the logistics-side of putting the zine together with
the help of a core group of friends. (Check out the Meet
the Team section to learn more about these wonderful people!) We've
played around with the idea of making GreenLight a non-profit, but for
now we're just doing it in our spare time... after work and on the weekends.
